Current Research Interests
The focus of our research is in image-based patient-specific computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of blood flows. In particular, we concentrate on blood flows to the brain. This research involves: a) the development of computational methods and tools for patient-specific modeling from medical images, and b) the application of these models to the study of cerebrovascular diseases. The objective of our research is to connect hemodynamic variables obtained from patient-specific models to clinical events in order to better understand the disease processes for improving patient evaluation and treatment. In particular, we are studying cerebral aneurysms which are the leading cause of hemorrhagic strokes, a very devastating event. This is a highly multi-disciplinary field that involves: medical image analysis, geometry modeling, grid generation, numerical solution of partial differential equations, computer graphics and visualization, as well as anatomy and physiology, biofluids, biomechanics, and vascular biology. For this reason, this work is carried out in close collaboration with researchers and clinicians from other institutions. We work very closely with clinicians from the Interventional Neuroradiology unit at Inova Fairfax Hospital.
This work has been supported by grants from the Whitaker Foundation, Philips Medical Systems, the American Heart Association, Boston Scientific and the National Institutes of Health.
